Understanding Photo Digitization

Photo digitization, also referred to as image digitization or picture digitization, is the process of converting physical photographs, prints, slides, or other visual materials into digital or electronic formats. This transformation allows these tangible visual memories to be stored, accessed, and shared in a digital form. But it’s not just about making old photos accessible on your computer or smartphone; it’s a means to preserve the past, protect cherished memories, and ensure they are easily shareable with current and future generations. When you digitize printed photos, you are converting them to a digital or electronic file. This is similar to our current digital photos taken on our mobile phones or with a digital SLR camera. Digital files make sharing and protecting or backing up much easier. Other outdated media like slides, negatives, VHS tapes, reels can also go through this digitization process. Memorabilia like certificates, newspaper articles and scrapbook pages can also be converted to a current digital format. Click HERE to see a few of my family’s memories that I have digitized.

Why Image and Picture Digitization Matters

Image digitization and picture digitization offer numerous benefits and serve several important purposes:
  1. Preservation: Physical photos and prints deteriorate over time due to factors like light exposure, moisture, and wear and tear. By digitizing them, you safeguard these memories from physical degradation, ensuring they remain intact for generations.
  2. Accessibility: Digital photos are easily accessible on various devices like smartphones, tablets, and computers. This accessibility means you can relive your cherished memories anytime, anywhere, and share them with loved ones with a simple click.
  3. Organization: Digital files can be easily organized, tagged, and categorized. This makes it simple to locate specific photos and keeps your collection well-structured.
  4. Sharing: Image digitization and picture digitization enable you to share digitized photos effortlessly with family and friends through email, social media, or cloud storage services. This facilitates the sharing of family history and stories.

Methods of Image and Picture Digitization

    • High-speed scanners are great for snapshots that are not fragile as the photos are automatically fed into the scanner.
    • Flatbed scanners work well for larger items like newspaper or other memories that might be likely to fall apart. This includes certificates, artwork and scrapbook pages.
    • One can also use a mobile app; while this is convenient it might not provide the best quality scan.
    • A high-quality digital camera and dark room like “photo box” will give you wonderful results but correct lighting and placement/set up of the camera is vital.
Digitizing your outdated media allows you to easily share files with family and friends. Sharing is important to passing on your family’s legacy and stories. When there is one paper copy of a photo, that photo is precious to the entire family. What if the owner has a house fire or if the photo is damaged by a flood? Nothing can bring it back. However, if the paper photo has been digitized and backed up or located in permanent cloud storage, it is available to be re-printed. What is permanent cloud storage and why is it important to your digitizing efforts? Permanent cloud storge, like that offered by FOREVER, means your image is guaranteed for your lifetime + 100 years and is easily accessible from any device. This internet-based service means your family memories are triple backed up and encrypted, giving you unparalleled comfort that they are safe! Just think, your work now to digitize, protect and organize your family photos and videos will be available for your grandchildren, great grandchildren and beyond! What a wonderful feeling!
