Memorial Day, the unofficial start of Summer has come and gone. And, the official start of Summer, June 20, is right around the corner. What memories will you make this year?
Many of us have not spent quality time with family and friends for a year or more. I know I will treasure the time together, now more than ever! I thought I’d share a few tips that have helped me take great photos. Maybe they will help you as you gather with your precious loved ones:
- Lighting is key. I find bright sunshine is the most difficult light for taking photos. Morning, as the sun is rising in the sky or afternoon, as the sun begins to set, provide the easiest light to photograph in. The light will be very soft and natural. Also, overcast days are this (amateur) photographer’s best friend!
- We often hear “get closer” as a tip to get better photos. This is very true. Often we can improve the photo with a few steps towards the subject. I find this to be especially true with my cell phone camera. On the other hand, I do appreciate taking a step back to have one photo of the entire scene and what is going on. Often these are photos that tell a special story!
- Shoot photos from different angles. Your photos will be much more interesting if you don’t take them all straight on. Get low. Get high and look down from above. Kneel beside your subject. Have fun with trying new things. Remember, you can always delete the bad ones!
- Turn off your flash. I’m not a professional but this has been the most impactful suggestion for taking photos with my handy dandy cell phone camera. The quality of cameras is so good now and the photos will look so much more natural without the flash. I rarely shoot a photo with my flash on!
