Trimming the tree is a sacred part of Christmas for many families. What about yours? Do you gather for a special meal while decorating? Do you have everyone add a new or favorite ornament? Who adds the star to the tippy top of the tree?
As our kids got older and were busy, we tended to decorate in chunks. We would add the lights today, ornaments tomorrow and garland or popcorn strings the next day. The ornaments were the part we enjoyed the most. We loved pulling them out one at a time and remembering where we were on vacation when we bought it or who the special friend was who gifted it to us. My favorite ornaments are still those my children made in preschool or elementary school. Seeing the love they put into them still warms my heart.
I create an ornament for each of my now grown children and grandchildren with a photo of one of the year’s big happenings. It might be the year they ought their home, had a baby or graduated with their Masters degree. A few years ago my daughter’s beloved cat, Zoso, disappeared for a week. Hannah was distraught thinking something had happened to him but was thrilled when he was found safe about 2 miles from home. Guess what was on her ornament that year? You got it. Zoso!
Recently, my friend Janess said she puts that year’s holiday card family photo on an ornament! I love this idea and plan to start the same tradition. What a great reminder of years past that will beautify our tree!
Are you planning your family photo shoot? Ours will happen over Thanksgiving weekend when we will be together with our three children and their families.
